Seeking deals During Thanksgiving, many Americans shopped online instead of going out in the cold to find deals. They spent 5% more than last year, as many people chose laptops and phones over going out in the cold.
Early online sales numbers showed that people were spending more at big stores, but the usual rush of Black Friday shopping didn’t seem as busy this year as it had in the past, when big crowds lined up on Friday mornings after Thanksgiving. A lot of the shoppers who did go out said they were on a budget and worried about spending too much because prices keep going up and the job market is getting weaker.
Adobe Analytics, which checks e-commerce transactions online and tracks over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, says that overall online spending on Thanksgiving Thursday went up 5.3% year over year to $6.4 billion. Adobe said it was better than expected because online shopping has made Black Friday less important, with sales and discounts lasting for weeks.
